Horse Box Trailer Maintenance

Maintaining your horse or box trailer is essential to ensure it stays safe, reliable, and long-lasting.

Whether you use it for hauling horses, equipment, or goods, regular care and attention can prevent costly repairs and ensure smooth, worry-free journeys. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your trailer in excellent condition.

Regular Cleaning

In an ideal world, your trailer should be cleaned after every use, but that wont happen in today's world! therefore its suggested to clean your trailer as much as possible as it helps to prevent rust and corrosion of essential safety and moving parts. Using a mild soap and clean water will be enough to prevent the rust. The interior will also need cleaning (especially in horse trailers.)

Tires

Tires are one of the most heavily used parts on a trailer. They've always got the weight of the trailer resting on them and are forever being worn down with use; so it’s crucial to keep them in good condition. Check them regularly for signs of wear, cracks, or bulges. Make sure the tire pressure is correct; under-inflated tires can cause uneven wear and even lead to blowouts.

Inspect the Floor

For horse trailers, the floor is one of the most important areas to maintain. Over time, moisture, manure, and bedding can wear down the floor, leading to rot or slippery surfaces. Regularly inspect the floor for any damage, and if you notice soft spots or wood splinters, make sure to replace or repair it. For box trailers, inspect the floor for cracks, wear, and any areas where debris could collect or cause damage.

Check the Brakes

If your trailer has brakes, they should be regularly checked to ensure they’re functioning properly. Brake pads wear out over time and can reduce stopping power, so make sure they’re inspected and replaced as necessary. Additionally, test the trailer’s brake lights and wiring before every use to make sure everything is working, as faulty lighting can lead to accidents or fines.
