Before we begin, safety is paramount. Therefore when handling your horse we recommend you wear a riding hat, appropriate, sturdy footwear and gloves to maintain a good grip.
When loading your horse onto a trailer it is important to consider:
How many horses you are travelling,
If you are travelling one horse, load them on the right-hand side of the trailer,
If travelling two horses, the heavier horse should be on the right-hand side to provide balance when turning corners.
Safety and security before you start your journey:
Ensure the breach bar and/or partition are secured correctly,
Tie the horse to the tie ring using a quick release knot. The rope should be short enough that the horse cannot lower its head under the breast bar,
Once your horse is secured appropriately in the trailer, stand to the side and raise the ramp slowly, then secure all fastenings.
When unloading your horse off the trailer it is important to consider:
Surrounding and safety,
On arrival, check your surroundings and then lower the ramp,
Untie your horse before you undo the breast/breach bar or open the partition,
Before unloading your horse ensure you are in control and don’t allow the horse to rush down the ramp.
6 Top Tips to remember when loading and unloading your horse:
It is not recommended that you travel horses in a trailer with the front top door open due to the risk of injury to your horse,
When lowering or raising the ramp, stand to one side to prevent injury,
Open the front ramp whilst loading to make loading more inviting for your horse. However, every horse is different so consider your horse’s behaviour and preferences.,
Make sure the jockey door is unlocked to exit through after loading,
Ensure the breast bars are secure and at the correct height for your horse,
If your horse has never travelled before or is difficult to load, practice in a calm manner loading and unloading. Additionally, making the first journey for them should ideally be short to get them used to travelling.
